Fire Safety in your Manufactured Home
Make sure that all the wiring is in good working condition. If you have lights that flicker, warm inoperable switch plates or breakers that trip often, get these things repaired. Faulty wiring is one of the leading causes of fires in mobile homes.
Have an escape plan and practice escape routes with your family. You should have at least two ways to get out of your house. Make sure you can open and get out of windows and doors. Repair any windows or doors that do not open easily. Hold a fire drill twice a year to rehearse your escape routes. In case of a fire, get out immediately, go to a neighbor’s house and notify the fire department.
Make sure that all your smoke alarms are in working condition. You should have at least one at each end of the home. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month and change the batteries yearly. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years.
Make sure that your home is equipped with at least one Fire Extinguisher. If you don’t know how to use a fire extinguiser you can get training from your local Fire Department. Keep your fire extinguisher in an easy to get place and make sure that all family members know where it is. The kitchen is always a good place.
Do not store combustibles or flammables near heat sources. Make certain that your home has a skirt around the perimeter of the house to prevent leaves and other easily flammable items from blowing under the home.
